Trip Itinerary

Scenic float on the middle fork of the flathead river bordering Glacier National Park, 5.5 miles to Blankenship Bridge where the North Fork of the Flathead River merges with the Middle Fork.

Start with a short shuttle to the river access near the golf course in West Glacier. An enjoyable and mild float along the Park boundary with the chance to view moose, deer, bears, and a host of smaller mammals and birds who frequent the river. There will be opportunities to see close up the effects of the 2003 Robert Fire and nature's new cycle of growth in the burned areas.

The only rapids on this trip are short and modest Class II (easy, intermediate rapid) at Devil's Elbow, exciting enough to thrill the beginner but not dangerous enough to cause concern. Early in the rafting season during high water, this trip continues 5 miles beyond Blankenship Bridge to Coram; this trip is still suitable for younger children. Shuttle back to our office in West Glacier following trip.

This trip covers Class I-II rapids.

Middle Fork of the Flathead River

The Middle Fork originates in the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and flows northwesterly to form the southern border of Glacier National Park in northwest Montana. The Middle Fork offers a unique way to experience the Park's majestic beauty. In the spring and early summer there is good whitewater on the Middle Fork. At this time of year the whitewater is at its peak with Class III-IV rapids. By late July the rapids have moderated to fun-filled Class II-III.

The Middle Fork has excellent fishing with the unique Westslope cutthroat trout (a native fish of the Flathead River System) being the primary fish. The Flathead is one of the few fisheries for this type of fish. There are also some rainbow trout, lake trout, and whitefish in the rivers.

What to Bring:

Wear shoes and clothing you don't mind getting wet (swimsuit or shorts and T-shirt in warm weather, fleece pullover in cool temperatures - avoid cotton) and have dry clothes in your car to change into after the trip. Bring only waterproof disposable cameras and water in plastic bottles.

Wetsuits provided at no additional charge when weather or water conditions require their use. Also available for rent for $5, including booties. Booties available for rent for $2.

Waiver Required:

Before going on any river trip, each guest must read, understand, and sign our Liability Waiver. Parents or legal guardians must sign for any children.

River Rapid Class Rating System:

  • Class I -- Easy - Water with riffles and small waves and few obstructions that are easily missed.
  • Class II -- Novice - Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels. Some maneuvering required. Rocks and medium waves are easily missed.
  • Class III -- Intermediate - Rapids with moderate, irregular waves that are difficult to avoid with tight passages, strong eddies and currents.
  • Class IV -- Advanced - Intense, predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling, with some unavoidable waves and tight passages.
  • Class V -- Expert - Extremely long or very violent rapids. Drops may contain large, unavoidable waves and tight chutes with complex routes.
